What Makes a Gift Valuable?

On a Sunday morning, while I was sitting in church before the service, a precious boy named Joel came up to me and handed me a gift. As you can see in the photo, it was a handmade paper card with the words, “Come to Me, My Sweet Child.” He had creatively drawn an image resembling Jesus, with His hands wide open, welcoming us into His presence.

Gifts have a way of bringing excitement to anyone. When a gift comes as a surprise, the excitement increases. It becomes even more special when it comes from someone close to our heart, when it is something we truly love, or when it is something expensive.

But a few thoughts rushed into my mind when Joel gave me this gift that Sunday morning.

In a world where we are increasingly drawn to brands, material possessions, and the comforts we enjoy, we sometimes forget to appreciate the seemingly small yet precious things in life. We become so accustomed to receiving and possessing things that we lose the ability to enjoy the little things.

Sometimes, we forget to recognize the effort, thought, and heart behind a gift.

What Makes a Gift Valuable?

The Bible gives us a beautiful example of this through the offering of the widow. Jesus noticed a poor widow who gave two small coins as an offering. Although her offering appeared insignificant compared to the larger amounts given by others, Jesus recognised its true value. She had given out of her poverty, while others gave from their abundance. Her offering was precious because of the heart behind it and the sacrifice it represented. God sees beyond the size of our offerings and our outward performances. He looks at the heart.

In the same way, what made Joel’s gift so special was not its material value but the heart behind it. He had thoughtfully made this card for me. He could have given it to someone else, but he chose to give it to me. For him, this was something precious that he could offer from his own hands. The time he invested, his creativity, the thoughtfulness he demonstrated, and the love behind his gift made it priceless to me.

A gift’s true value is not always determined by its price, but by the heart that gives it.

Your God-Given Creativity Can Bless Others

Not every gift that brings a smile to someone’s face has to be purchased with money.

God has placed creativity, talents, and abilities within each one of us. Just as Joel used his creativity to make something meaningful, we too can use what God has given us to inspire and bless others.

Take time to look within yourself and discover those hidden, God-given abilities. Perhaps it is writing, drawing, singing, encouraging someone, or simply doing something with your hands. When we use our talents and skills with the intention of blessing others and glorifying God, they can become powerful instruments in His hands. It has the potential to reach and bless many more people.

Learn to Enjoy the Little Things

We must learn to pause and appreciate the seemingly small things around us. Let us not become so occupied with pursuing bigger things that we lose the ability to appreciate what is already in our hands.

When we learn to enjoy the little things, we become more present in the moment and cultivate a grateful heart.

Sometimes, a simple handmade card from a precious boy can remind us of an important truth: the most valuable things in life aren't always those money can buy.
